Nick shrugged his shoulder loosely. The guilt that had already sunk into his peace of mind had already corrupted him the night before. He really didn’t have an answer for her. What was he supposed to say? She was right. What he’d done was wrong. He took a step forward. All he wanted was to hold her and make it all go away. “I’m sorry, Jennifer,” was all he could come with. He looked up at her to catch her gaze. He needed her to know he was sincere.

Jennifer looked at him, she could never read this guy properly but he looked guilty. She nodded her head and sighed, her eyes looking around everywhere but at him. “Yeah, me too.” She dropped her arms down to her sides. “I guess I’ve got some phone calls to make.” She said, turning slightly. Her trust had been broken. By the two men she trusted most.

Nick could only watch as she made for the door and he had to be honest, it felt like she was taking his heart with her. He hadn’t felt this way since he’d last seen Contessa. But somehow this seemed worst. “Jen, wait… I’m sorry. I hope you’ll find in you to forgive me soon…” Because if she didn’t, he didn’t quite know how to handle that. He’d allowed himself to fall for this woman only to lose her in just over a month.

Jennifer said nothing. She stopped at the door for a brief second before opening it and walking out. She needed to be alone. She couldn’t take this, not now. She was hurt and she didn’t know how to handle it. She had never gone through something like this before, then again, this was quite the unique situation.

Nick ran hand over the back of his head. He could take that. He didn’t think he was all that evil, but looking at it from her perspective, he could understand the assessment. “I.. Jen, it wasn’t to hurt you or your family… It needed to be done. For the greater good. The good fight. And I know you’re upset right now.. But I’m hoping you could think about it and one day understand that.”

Jen shook her head. “No. I could understand if maybe you’d told SHIELD that. I could understand if it was like, an Avengers thing. But to tell his family that. To drag our family through this. And for you to LIE to my face. We’ve just gotten over the rollercoaster and accepted that he was gone and now this? What the hell am I going to tell my family?” She crossed her arms.

He wanted nothing more than to reach out for again, but he knew it would be best if he didn’t. “Jen, I’m not joking around. I wouldn’t joke about something like this.. But if you don’t believe me, then you’ll see for yourself when he gets here. And it’ll be all over the ‘Carrier that he’s still alive… He is alive. And I.. I apologize for lying to you.”

Her sadness quickly turned into anger as she looked at him. She spoke quietly, but there was something different about her voice. “Do you know what I went through? What my entire family went through?” She clenched her fists before relaxing herself. As much as she wanted to hit him, she knew she couldn’t. “You’re an evil man.”

Nick leaned in to kiss her one last time before leaning himself back on his desk, dropping his hands to lean on his palms. “Jen.. It’s about Coulson.” He sighed. How did he go about this again? Telling it to Natasha and Maria was hard enough, but they were coworkers. This was a thousand times harder. Not only was this woman special to him, but Coulson was her uncle. She’d known the man since birth. And at the news of his death, she took it harder than anyone he knew. Not to mention her dealing with the same sorrow from her family. And all the while he comforted her while he knew the man was well and alive. And for what? He shook his head. Better to go for the band aid effect. “Your uncle is alive… He’s alive and Agents Hill and Romanoff found he and out last night. He’ll be back to base in a couple of hours,” he said as evenly as possible.

She kissed him back and looked at him. Coulson? What did her uncle have to do with anything? She was in a bit of a panic mode at this point. Then again, she had since she stepped into his office. When he told her, she took a step back, nearly falling back over the chair. She looked at him completely confused, her chest hurt. She shook her head and looked to the floor, then to him, and then back at the floor, and then back to him. “No..Nick…that’s not funny.” The hurt in her eyes was apparent. “Nick, don’t joke about that. He meant everything to me.” She crossed her arms, not sure if she really did believe him or not.

Jennifer stood up slowly, looking at him. Maybe this wouldn’t be as bad as she thought. Perhaps he was only trying to worry her for a moment. Maybe this was nothing. He looked at him before kissing him back, her eyes scanning over his face. Now she was confused by his words. She pulled her eyebrows together and tilted her head. “What…what is it?” She asked, her hand moving to rest on his chest, her fingers playing with his shirt.  Now she was worried again. She slowly moved back just slightly to get a good look at him. “Nick, what is it?” She wondered if he’d been involved with someone else. That was the only thing she could think of now.

Expecting the knock and dreading it at the same time, Nick downed the rest of his scotch and set the glass on the outer edge of his desk. This wasn’t going to be a conversation between two people in a relationship. He would need to deliver this news like a Director to a subordinate. He had a feeling that that was going to be the manner in which the two of them would speaking for quite some time after this. He clenched his jaw tightly and answered, “Come in.”

He waited for her to open the door before motioning to a chair in front of his desk professionally. “Sit down, please.”

Jennifer opened the door with a smile that quickly fell when she saw him. He wasn’t happy and now she was worried. She scurried over to the chair and sat down, staying quiet as a mouse. She wondered if she was being fired. She hadn’t done anything wrong but maybe she had and not realized it. She placed her hands in her lap and sat up straight, looking at him. She couldn’t bring herself to say anything to him, as there was a million things running through her mind right now. She’d have to pack up and move back home. She couldn’t stay in New York if she lost this job. There was no way she’d ever be able to afford it.

The look on her face put him off slightly, but he needed to get this out. Even so, he stood and came around his desk. Looking down on her with a somewhat sad smile, he took her hand and lifted it to his lips, kissing her knuckles tenderly. He pulled her up to stand, all professionalism lost if only for a minute. He would truly miss having her by his side and decided then and there that when she undoubtedly left him in the minutes soon coming, he would try his damnedest to get her back.

He brought a hand to her cheek and caressed it with the rough pad of his thumb. He leaned in to kiss her gently. “Jen, I have to to tell you something. Something that I’m sure will make you want to slap me and possibly never see me again…” He trailed off, his lips trailing over her cheek. How did he think he could do this as her boss?

Nick took a seat at his desk with a sigh and a scotch. He really hadn’t felt this guilty in a very long time. He knew how much Hill and Romanoff trusted him… And he had far betrayed that trust this time around. He didn’t deserve to be forgiven. He would understand completely if either of them didn’t speak to him outside the necessary for weeks, maybe longer. His greatest fear for the time being was that one of them—or worst both of them—would quit on him. That was the last thing he needed. Especially at time like now. But aside from hurting them, he had just one more heart to break before stepped onto that Helicarrier deck today; Coulson’s niece and Nick’s current…. girlfriend, Jenny.

Nick cursed under his breath. He would really be in the dog house, so to speak, after this. Jenny probably wouldn’t speak to him at all after. And he deserved that, and then some. He even encouraged it. Nick didn’t consider himself someone she needed to be involved with anyway. Didn’t mean he liked it, though.

Wth one last breath of conviction , he picked up his phone and opened a new text to Jennifer:

I need to see you in my office.

Jenny was just finishing wrapping up an agent’s arm when her phone started to vibrate. She sent him on his way and pulled out her phone, reading the text. Uh oh. That sounded awfully ominous. Then again, anything that came from him did. She locked up as she left the med area and walked up to Fury’s office. There was something odd around here lately, she could tell. But then she remembered that this was SHIELD and everything was odd all the time. She tapped on his door with her knuckles, not wanting to just waltz right into his office. Regardless of what she may or may not be to him, she still had a ton of respect for the man and his position of power.

I’ve been working so much lately. It just seems like people are getting hurt just to keep me distracted.
